Santa Cecilia Granite Floating Shower Seat
by Darren
This is a honed Santa Cecilia Granite shower seat in a travertine shower. It's called a "floating shower seat" because it looks like it's floating. Most of the time when you put a seat in a shower, you have to angle it slightly towards the drain to keep the water from standing along the corners and back wall. Not with this idea. No standing water in the corners! Here's why. Before the walls were tiled, we had the contractor install 4 half inch stainless steel rods into the studs. Each rod protruded from the wall about two inches after tiling. Two rods were placed along the back wall and one rod was placed on each side towards the front of the seat. We then ground slots on the bottom of the Santa Cecilia granite so the seat would sit down on the rods and not slide off. We allowed half an inch of gape around each side of the stone to let water run down the walls. We doubled up two pieces of granite to give it extra strength.
